How to Pick a Gift for a New Boyfriend

By katie George

It seems to never fail. You meet a new guy, things are going well and BAM! A gift-buying occasion arises. Whether it's Christmas, a birthday, or some other holiday, something as simple as choosing the right gift can seem like a huge decision. It will be easier if you follow a few simple guidelines.

1. Consider how long you have been with the new boyfriend

If it's only been a few weeks, you'll want to go with something that says, "Hey, I like you," rather than "I want to get married tomorrow." Perhaps you have known each other for a while, but only recently became involved. This might be your opportunity to say, "I hope this turns into something serious."

2. Think about what he likes

Sports memorabilia, video games, and concert tickets are almost always great gifts. That is assuming, of course, he's expressed an interest in the past. And that's the key. Pay attention when he discusses his passions and the gift may very well suggest itself.

3. Think about what he needs

For example, if you notice he is always losing pens, beer mugs, tie clips or anything else, buying him extras to keep on hand will show him you're paying attention.

4. Notice his friends

Has he been admiring his buddy's new MP3 player from afar? Buying your new boyfriend the latest version is sure to win you extra points.

5. Keep it simple

Taking him to his favorite team's game could be the perfect gift for a new boyfriend--if it's local. Flying him to a Laker's game when you live in New York could scare him off, even though he would have the time of his life.
